1 - Research

Capturing a picture on the moment now has become something mainstream since it is now been built-in everyone's portable device. Being now mostly used to immortalize a moment for nostalgic reminder, there are still people using photography as a medium of storytelling.

Aaron Siskind and Vivian Maier are both an example of photographers who uses photography to tell a tale, but not any kind of tale; to share how they perceive it. Siskin shots are usually used to capture and represent the social conditions in contemporary societies while as Maier's pictures try to express her liberal worldview from what she has seen around her.

Aaron Siskin- Peru 342

Siskin's goal of showing what most of are not used to see; an other social condition within our society is quite intriguing. The left piece is practically a political campaign poster used in Peru all destroyed that says "Peru Needs You" all destroyed makes it seem more like the country's own cry for help even though they actually never quite asked any specially after what I know what is happening over there at my home country.

Harlem Street Scene 4
Aaron Siskin - Harlem Street Scene 4

Whereas Harlem Street Scene 4 well it is quite simple plain shot from high angle on one's apartment window, but if you look closely you can see that what those people are doing and they are basically offering waxing shoes service as a sign of need since back then in New York a working place for a newly freed afro-american was quite harder and their standing in society was not as good as it was before, hence the need to work even in the streets offering whatever they could.

In Maier's case, mostly a close proximity shot somehow evokes many things to say about what she sees as like why or how did this happened. The picture from the left is part of her collection Street 4 and as seen many doors are being used as a fence where even in New York poverty was a matter of concern back then.

The picture from the right is part of her Street 5 collection and as the same thing mentioned in the last statement, you can see the same thing going on but this time with someone sleeping on a bench. There is no really context to the picture but as you can see there is always a question us viewers ask ourselves why did she take the picture.
